Australasian Shoveler

Anas rhynchotis

The beautifully plumaged male, with striking orange legs, is one of the most handsome of our ducks. Females resemble Pacific Black ducks.
They feed by filtering water with their very large bill.
The Shoveler is relatively uncommon but we are sometimes fortunate to have several pairs on the lake.
