Black-winged Stilt

Himantopus himantopus

Many beautiful Black-winged Stilts breed at our lake each year. Their nests can often be seen, sometimes not far from the shoreline. They favour using a mound or an old stump in shallow water but will also build on dry land. The young chicks feed themselves; their parents stay close and sound the alarm when they detect any threat.
