Black-shouldered Kite

Elanus axillaris

Commonly seen when the lake is dry. Look for them hovering whilst hunting for mice, and resting on the taller tree stumps between forays. Their preferred food is small mammals but they will also take large insects. This beautiful raptor is closely related to very similar species which are widespread globally.
