Job Description

Ready to help us transform healthcare? Bring your true colors to blue.

What We Need

In May 2020, BCBSMA formed an internal nudge unit, led by its Performance Measurement and Improvement (PMI) division, with assistance from consultants and academics. Since then, the nudge unit has deployed over 100 behavioral insights-informed interventions, using randomized deployments to maximize evaluability. These include efforts to improve screening, medication use, lab testing, and billing patterns through channels like letters, emails, texts, faxes, and the BCBSMA member app with over 1 million users.

Reporting to the Director, Nudge Unit, Behavioral Insights & Strategic Research, the Senior Behavioral Scientist will support applying behavioral insights to enhance decisions, experiences, and health outcomes for BCBSMA’s members, providers, and staff. All activities will align with BCBSMA’s strategic pillars: quality, equity, affordability, and consumer experience.

The Senior Behavioral Scientist will collaborate with the Director and SVP, support the growth of the nudge unit, mentor staff, manage projects and evaluations, facilitate training, and work with external consultants and academics.

Your Day-to-Day

  1. Lead all phases of nudge projects and evaluations, organizing results and tracking progress.
  2. Coordinate activities across business units, vendors, and consultants to apply behavioral insights toward strategic goals.
  3. Design and execute mixed methods research (qualitative, A/B testing, RCTs, pre-post evaluations) for deep insights.
  4. Communicate with external experts and collaborators.
  5. Train and mentor internal staff on behavioral insights.
  6. Create presentations for executive and leadership meetings.

This document is not an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, skills, duties, or conditions. Employees may perform other related duties as required.

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
  • Ability to motivate and manage cross-functional teams, with coaching experience.
  • Strong project management background.
  • Flexibility in changing environments.
  • High initiative; ability to work independently and in teams.

What You Bring:

  • At least 8 years of experience in consulting, research, healthcare, insurance, or related fields.
  • Training and experience in behavioral insights evaluation preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s or PhD in Economics, Behavioral Science, Psychology, or related field preferred.
