About The Role:

The Quad Cities International Airport is looking for an eager applicant for the Public Safety Officer position. Under the direction of the Public Safety Manager, the Public Safety Officer provides police protection and aircraft fire suppression and rescue services for the Quad Cities International Airport. The Public Safety Officer position is 24 hours on, 48 hours off, 2756 hours per year. The wage range starts at $20.51 per hour. Annualized compensation is roughly equivalent to $56,525 - $62,764, including overtime and holiday compensatory time.

SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Public Safety Manager, the Public Safety Officer provides police protection, security, aircraft fire suppression, and rescue services for the Quad Cities International Airport.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary from time to time.

  1. Responds to all emergencies, including fuel spills, fire suppression, victim rescue, first aid, on-site accidents/incidents, medicals etc.
  2. Responds to alarms and dispatched calls via foot or vehicle; decides what actions to take based on the situation, facts known and position limitations.
  3. Protects airport property and persons by citation, arrest, or other intervention.
  4. Patrols airport property by foot or vehicle and identifies security breaches, safety hazards and problems.
  5. Conducts daily airfield inspections per FAA Part 139 regulations. Completes all required documentation of airfield inspections.
  6. Actively engages in wildlife mitigation, harassing, dispersing, and destroying/disposing of wildlife per FAA Part 139 regulations. Completes all required wildlife documentation and reporting.
  7. Investigates suspicious activities and situations observed through field or electronic surveillance.
  8. Circulates among visitors, tenants, and employees to preserve order and protect property.
  9. Warns persons of rule infractions or violations, and detains, apprehends, or evicts violators from premises, using force when necessary.
  10. Interviews suspects, victims and witnesses and prepares/submits written reports regarding criminal incidents, on-site accidents, hazards, or security infractions.
  11. Escorts unauthorized individuals in the secured areas of the airport.
  12. May operate and monitor security control panels, alarms, and related security equipment to provide area and visitor security.
  13. Monitors weather conditions, reporting threatening conditions to Communications Operators and the Operations Department.
  14. Organizes and maintains all required paperwork, logs, activity, and incident reports, etc.
  15. Operates a variety of computer, electronic access, surveillance, and other equipment.
  16. Follows and complies with all safety and work rules and regulations.
  17. Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.

OTHER DUTIES:

  1. Takes incoming calls, refers to others, takes complaints or dispatches resources as necessary.
  2. Performs emergency dispatch and communication functions as necessary.
  3. Dispatches enforcement and other emergency units and makes required notifications as necessary.
  4. Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Experience and/or Training

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D., AND
  • Certified Law Enforcement Officer Designation in accordance with the Illinois Police Training Act or ability to obtain a waiver through the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board (ILETSB).
  • Work experience in Emergency Medical Services and/or as a firefighter beneficial.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to learn FAA and TSA regulations that affect airport security and ARFF requirements and state, federal and local regulations regarding police powers and firefighter methods.
  • Ability to learn and apply airport policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols relating to the protection and security of the airport.
  • Ability to use various computer applications and to learn new and updated software.
  • Ability to use handheld and ground radios to effectively communicate and report physical location at all times.
  • Ability to exercise sound independent judgment and initiative in a wide variety of situations within established guidelines.
  • Ability to act quickly and appropriately in emergencies and regarding suspicious situations and potential threats to people and property.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate records and reports.
  • Ability to work effectively and courteously with all levels of management, supervisors, staff, visitors, officials from other agencies, emergency personnel, and others encountered in the course of work.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.

Required Special Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years of age and a U.S. citizen.
  • Eyesight correctable to 20/20 in each eye.
  • Ability to pass post-employment offer physical and mental examinations, including lung function test and drug screen.
  • Ability to pass the ILETSB physical fitness standards test after employment offer.
  • Ability to pass a police background check.
  • Ability to pass a background investigation to obtain unescorted Airport Identification Access privileges.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle and possession of a valid driver’s license.

The following must be successfully completed prior to completion of twelve-month probationary period:

  • Completion of FAA recognized Aircraft Rescue Firefighting course.
  • Completion of HAZ-MAT/hepatitis training.
