Job Summary The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider responsible for the assessment and management of various patient populations, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, developing appropriate plans of care, and ongoing evaluation. The PA may also precept a small group of learners. Responsibilities Providing care to patients in the outpatient clinic setting of the Newton‑Wellesley Hospital Sports Medicine Department. Obtaining and documenting comprehensive orthopedic histories and physical examinations for new, established, and post‑operative patients. Determining and implementing appropriate treatment plans. Acting as First Assist in the Operating Room. Reviewing patient care management issues with the Medical Director and Lead PA. Consulting with appropriate resources as needed. Ordering and interpreting appropriate imaging studies. Coordinating follow‑up care with Orthopedic Surgeons. Performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including wound care/debridement, suturing/suture removal, splint/brace or cast application and/or removal, joint aspiration, and injections of steroid and anesthetic agents. Writing patient orders in accordance with Medical Staff Policies. Handling in‑basket documentation in a timely manner. Providing first‑level response to acute patient complications and emergencies, and initiating appropriate measures. Accepting responsibility and accountability for delivering patient care. Collaborating and communicating effectively, establishing good rapport with all levels of personnel. Attending orthopedic grand rounds each week. Participating in the quality improvement/quality assurance process. Participating in monthly PA meetings. Essential Functions Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a designated patient population in ambulatory, inpatient, operative, and/or procedural settings. Performs complete histories and physical examinations. Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests. Develops appropriate plans of care and follow‑up based on outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings. Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures. Consistently provides high‑quality and timely documentation, including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes, and discharge summaries. Performs bedside procedures as appropriate to the patient population. Qualifications Education Master’s Degree Physician Assistant required. Experience Experience as a licensed Physician Assistant preferred. Licenses and Credentials Physician Assistant [State License] – Generic – HR Only required.
