Are you looking to be part of a dynamic team that protects the environment? The Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Fish Springs Hatchery (FSH) is seeking a motivated individual to work as a Fish and Wildlife Technician located in Big Pine, California.

Under the supervision of the Fish Hatchery Manager II, the Fish and Wildlife Technician performs essential fish culture tasks to meet production goals. This includes the care of wild, domestic, and endangered fish, including early-stage development of eggs and fry, proper fish culture techniques, and maintenance of fish health through feeding, grading, and cleaning operations. Additional duties involve fish stocking using specialized equipment, participating in regional vaccination efforts, and conducting facility maintenance tasks such as landscaping, equipment repair, and compliance-related water sampling.

Working Conditions

Work in all weather conditions such as wind, rain, extreme heat, cold and direct sunlight. Open and close various types of valves, climb steep banks when necessary. Work near waters with uneven terrain and unpredictable flows. Climb ladders, operate various types of unusual support equipment used in the operation of the hatchery. Willingness to work throughout the State and at unusual hours; willingness to work on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Possess a valid Class C Driver’s License with the ability to upgrade to a Class A within a year of appointment, which is a commercial license with proper endorsements to operate and maintain commercial planting vehicles.

This position requires the employee to reside in State-Owned Housing at Fish Springs Creek Hatchery. While residing in state housing on site, the employee may work overnight standby, weekends and holidays in rotation with co-workers and respond to emergencies as required on a 24-hour basis. May also be required to wear the specified approved uniform.

Special Requirements

  • Ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds.
  • Capability to handle 50-pound feed and salt bags.
  • Work in and around water.
  • Ability to climb in and out of 4-foot-deep, water-filled raceways.
  • Capacity to work for prolonged periods in 54-60 degree Fahrenheit water.
  • Proficiency in negotiating 12-inch catwalks over open water.
  • Agility to navigate uneven terrain and confined spaces.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks for extended periods.
  • Perform manual labor and assist other hatchery employees as necessary or required.
  • Capacity to work in all weather conditions, including wind, rain, extreme heat, cold, and direct sunlight.
  • Fine motor skills for handling tools and assembling equipment.
  • Balance and hand-eye coordination for tasks involving machinery and precise movements.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

  • Knowledge of fish spawning, egg incubation, fry care, and disease treatment
  • Proficiency in operating vehicles, tools, and machinery (boats, trucks, backhoes, and power tools)
  • Skill in building concrete forms, pouring concrete, using woodworking and metalworking tools, and reading blueprints
  • Ability to maintain and repair facilities, equipment, fish screens, ladders, and traps
  • Comfort working in diverse environments, handling fish and wildlife, and removing debris or barriers from streams
  • Ability to assess fish health and water quality effectively
  • Understanding and adherence to safety regulations in handling tools, chemicals, and machinery
  • Commitment to sustainable fish and wildlife habitat development and improvement
  • Capability to perform physically demanding tasks
