Job Description

Job Summary:
As a Bindery Operator 3, you will operate a range of auxiliary binding machines equipped with multiple cutting heads and control surfaces. You may operate automatic adhesive binding machines (perfect binders) that feature interconnected process stations. You will make necessary adjustments to synchronize multiple workstations on a single machine, directing your crew through all aspects of production while monitoring quality, output, and productivity.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Set up, adjust and operate a variety of auxiliary binding machines containing several cutting heads, control surfaces or other attachments
  • Inspect equipment for safety concerns
  • May operate automatic adhesive binding machines (perfect binders) that contain numerous interrelated process stations that are fed collated sheets or signatures and perform such functions as vibrating, milling, roughening, gluing, covering and delivering or stacking completed books, magazines or catalogs.
  • Direct crew though all aspects of production.

Desired Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of setup, adjustment, procedures, and capabilities of bindery equipment for folding, collating, and cutting printed materials.
  • Familiarity with various paper weights, sizes, and types to identify conditions like excessive moisture or curling that may require machine adjustments.
  • Basic mathematical skills (decimals, metric units) to interpret job orders and make precise adjustments.
  • Proficient in using standard and specialized tools to maintain the accuracy and operational efficiency of bindery machines.
  • Experience making adjustments to powered machines using hand tools (e.g., wrenches, screwdrivers, punches, knives) and specialized tools provided by manufacturers.
  • Knowledge of operating procedures for equipment such as folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, and binding/gluing machines.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions regarding machine operations and dimensional accuracy.

Physical Requirements

  • Physical capability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently, as well as a negligible amount constantly.
