Red-necked Avocet

Recurvirostra novaehollandiae

Small numbers of this elegant Australian endemic can sometimes be seen when we have shallow water in the lake. It will mix with stilts, but is easily distinguished from them by its chestnut coloured head and neck. The latin name refers to its upturned bill.
