Tawny Frogmouth

Podargus strigoides

This wonderful Australian endemic is so well camouflaged that is not often seen. Roosting during the day, it will often avoid detection by freezing in a pose resembling a broken tree branch. They feed on the ground at night, mostly on large insects but they will also take mice.
The nest is a very flimsy structure and young birds can easily fall out. Clutch size is one to three; when a young leaves the nest the parents will initially roost close by for protection.

  • Length: 34-52cm
  • Clutch Size: 1-3
